Hi, I’m Wayne Dewhurst

Psychotherapist,  Couples & Relationship Therapy

Being the youngest of four children taught me something early in life: sometimes you have to work a little harder to find your place in the crowd.

For me, that created a desire to feel seen and understood—and, eventually, an ability to help other people feel that way too.

Throughout my life, whether through business, community involvement, personal relationships, or my work as a psychotherapist, people have often told me that I have an ability to make them feel comfortable enough to talk openly about what is really happening.

That ability has become particularly important in my work with couples.

Over approximately 20 years of counselling, I have worked extensively with couples and families, including people navigating significant and sometimes life-altering circumstances. I help couples address communication, trust, intimacy and sexual concerns, recurring conflict, unhealthy relationship dynamics, and the impact of harmful behaviours within relationships.

Every couple has a different story, but I have learned that the patterns underneath relationship struggles can often become surprisingly familiar.

Learning to recognize those patterns—and understanding our own role within them—can create the possibility for something different.

What I Bring to the Therapy Room

My approach is compassionate, structured, conversational, and practical.

I believe people are more complicated than the worst thing they have done, the most difficult moment in their relationship, or the behaviour that brought them into therapy.

For me, compassion does not mean avoiding accountability or difficult conversations. It means creating enough trust and understanding that those conversations can actually happen.

This is particularly important with couples. When a relationship is struggling, it is easy to become focused on who is right and who is wrong. I am more interested in understanding what keeps happening between you, what each person may be struggling to communicate, and what is keeping you disconnected.

Clients often describe me as non-judgmental, easy to talk to, and practical. I bring structure to therapy and help clients translate insight into changes they can practice in their everyday lives.

Ultimately, I want couples to become better students of one another—more curious about their partner, more aware of themselves, and more intentional about the relationship they are creating together.
