Hi, I’m  Liz Witzke, Betrayal and Trauma Therapist

RP, CSAT

When I was in Grade 7, our classroom desks were arranged so that we sat facing one another. My classmates quickly discovered that if they sat across from me and started talking about what was happening in their lives, I would listen—really listen. Before long, they were informally lining up during breaks for what they jokingly called “Therapy Time with Liz,” announced with the kind of dramatic flair usually reserved for school plays and talent shows.

Looking back, it was probably an early sign of the work I would eventually find my way to. At the time, though, psychotherapy wasn’t something people in my small town really talked about, let alone considered a career. My school guidance counsellor had me pegged as a future doctor, lawyer, or perhaps philosopher, given my tendency to ponder existence—and its meaning—out loud.

Instead, my path took me through several very different worlds.

I spent time on stage as an actor, learning to step into the lives of people whose experiences differed from my own. I worked as a car broker and spent time at racetracks, where I discovered that people reveal a surprising amount about themselves while discussing how to apex a turn. Eventually, I became a criminal lawyer, which taught me to listen closely, think critically, bear complexity, and understand human behaviour from multiple perspectives.

What once seemed like unrelated experiences eventually began to make sense. Each taught me something about people—how we communicate, protect ourselves, make meaning from our experiences, and what can happen when someone feels genuinely heard.

Ultimately, those experiences brought me back to something that had been there since Grade 7: creating a space where people feel safe enough to talk honestly about what they are struggling with and begin making sense of it.

Becoming a therapist has felt like a homecoming. The desks have become couches, and thankfully no one announces “Therapy Time with Liz” anymore, but the essence remains. After an unconventional road, I finally feel exactly where I am meant to be.

When I’m not doing therapy…

Well, I have 4 children…need I say more?

My time outside of the office is spent learning from my 4 boys. We lead a very active life together that is not for the faint of heart, climbing, running, jumping and getting as dirty as possible. I am a master at tag. Navigating the struggles and hardships of parenting and family life has been one of my greatest growing edges. Flexibility and adaptivity are acquired skills that are practiced again and again. I am level headed in stress and a daily teacher in self-regulation. I won’t shy away from cuts and bruises or heartbreak and disappointment. These are important aspects of life.

I find my own self-care through yoga, yoga therapy, pilates, dance and sound meditation. I practice and teach in all four modalities and I am always ready to use them to support clients here at PSA.

I enjoy creative writing, sky-diving, gymnastics, silk and static trapeze, marathon running and appearing on our team podcast

For me physical and mental health are inextricably connected and understanding the body can be a way into finding awareness to direct next steps.
